Every individual has their own wants and needs, their own goals that they wish to achieve through training that are specific them. To create a training programme that will not only keep the participant motivated to maintain the programme for as long as is necessary to achieve the desired results, but also safely and efficiently satisfy their wants and needs, the trainer must be able to recognise their wants and needs, their likes and dislikes, their specific training goals.

Some times people do not know what their wants and needs are. They might simply want to get fit, or feel healthier, have more energy, or look better, but these are very broad statements and there are many variables that make up the journey towards these goals. Do they want to improve strength, power, endurance or all three? Do they want to improve co-ordination or skill or both? Do they want to build muscle or define it?

Below are a selection of some of the most common training goals and how they can be achieved.

With 10 years background working in the performing arts – acting, dancing, singing and stage combat – Dan can easily recognise the specific training goals of performers working in these industries and can give experienced advice in these specialist areas.

Weight Management

Do you have a special occasion coming up and you would like to fit into that beautiful dress, or maybe you're about to go on holiday and you want to look good in a bikini, or perhaps you'd simply like to feel better about your appearance. For those people who would like to shed a few kilos and keep them off, I can advise you about nutrition and food labels and how to keep a balanced diet. I can also design an exercise programme, to fit in with your schedule, which will burn those calories in the most efficient way.

Improving Active Daily Living

Do you get up in the morning, drive to work, sit at a desk all day, drive home again and then you're too tired to do any kind of activity? Are you frustrated with a sedentary lifestyle but your schedule prevents you from going to a gym? Do you find yourself exhausted climbing a flight of stairs? I can help you to gently integrate activity and exercise into your life without disrupting it. We will look at areas of your life where you might be able to fit some short activity, I will introduce you to exercises you can do in the office, or on the sofa and I will help you improve your diet to ensure you're energised throughout the day.

Muscle Building and/or Toning

Have you always wanted to be bigger and/or toned? Have you always wanted that ever elusive six pack? I can provide you with a training programme to specifically concentrate on building and/or toning muscle. We will look at which areas you would like to work on and set targets to aim for.

Sports Performance

Would you like to improve your time in the 400m? Would you like to win the next karate championships? Would you like to take part in a triathlon but you're not a strong cyclist? Would you like to run a marathon – and finish it? Whatever your goal I can design a progressive periodized training programme to help reach your target performance. I will look at improving speed, agility, suppleness, strength and stamina. We will discuss the mechanics of your chosen sport and I can teach you exercises to work the specific muscles used in the actions of that sport. We will also look at nutrition to give you a diet that will provide you with the necessary energy to compete.

Reducing Stress

Do you always feel under pressure? Do you try to take on more than you can manage? Is it all getting too much for you? Exercise is one of the best ways to reduce the effects of stress and even stop it altogether. I can give you a training programme that will fit in with your schedule and I can also instruct you in various relaxation techniques.

Actors

Actors can take their pick from any of the basic packages depending on what they want to achieve and what type character they are about to play. Adding to their routine I will also be concentrating on posture and we will look more into flexibility too. As with dancers it is important to keep energy levels up, for hectic schedules, with a good diet and to try some relaxation exercises to prepare for auditions and performances.

For actors I can also offer additional advice and instruction on audition speeches, improvisation, voice, texts and stagecraft.

Dancers

Programmes for dancers will concentrate on improving and maintaining flexibility, and stamina. Additionally I will put a great deal of emphasis onto nutrition – how and when to eat to maintain energy levels throughout a gruelling rehearsal or performance period, without putting on excess weight. I can also look at some strength training for dancers doing lift work and relaxation techniques for before and after performances.

Singers

Although not the most active of professions it does require a lot of core strength and lung power in addition to good posture. Plus, of course, there is maintaining that energy with a healthy diet that will not affect their voice and learning how to relax before auditions and performances. I can work to improve all these aspects alongside any of the basic packages.

Stunt Performers and Fighters

With particular attention paid to strength, agility and flexibility, to improve co-ordination, skill and accuracy and reduce the risk of injury. Just like with an actor I can concentrate on any specialist skill with an understanding on what is required. Not forgetting those important factors for nutrition and relaxation.

I can also offer additional advice and instruction on many aspects of stage and screen combat.
